The Secret to Life pt. 1

Indrid reserves the right to take a story down if he doesn't like it-this warning in place because the following is something of an experiment-a less-than-planned, off the cuff opening...

(tentative title)The Secret to Life

Andy Klink knew the secret.

It was a special secret; he was sure there were very few in the world who discovered this secret-it was related to such a taboo, avoided activity.

It amazed Andy that more people didn't know this secret, still. But perhaps they did and were afraid of it.

Andy wasn't afraid.

That was part of the discovery; Andy wasn't afraid of anything, and that was how he grasped the secret.

Though Kenton Mountain was only 5,568 feet, Sela felt she was on top of the world. The valley below was covered in morning mist and above her the sky was a shocking shade of blue-blue that seemed to crackle. The sun was still low on the horizon and flooded the mountaintop with it's yellow music.

Sela wanted to turn and turn like a little girl, but her boyfriend might think her silly. She turned to him, face alight.

"Baby-this has been the best weekend of my life."

Andy smiled-a radiant smile, perfectly white, just lopsided enough to add character to his handsome face. "Mine too, love." He reached his hand out and pulled her away from the edge of the cliff, the highest promontory on the mountain. "Now come here, kiss me."

They kissed. Their lips were cold from the hike up and they warmed together, tongues lazily dancing around one another. Sela knew Andy was the best kisser she'd ever met, but now early on an exquisitely beautiful fall morning he'd brought her up to the edge of heaven and kissing him felt almost like rapture. Were it not so chilly she would have wanted them to lay down there on the promontory and make love in the flood of morning sunlight.

Andy pulled back gently from the kiss.

"I feel like dancing."

Sela laughed. "So do I..."

It was Andy's turn to laugh. "It would warm us up!" He turned her in a circle.

"Oh, Andy..."

"Yes, love?"

"These have been the best 8 months of my life." Sela meant that. After her marriage to Bill the cheating alcoholic, she thought happy was no longer in her vocabulary.

Andy Klink had taken care of that. He was handsome-6'2", broad shouldered, with a beautifully sculpted face-finely hewn cheekbones, square chin with a hint of cleft, high forehead offset by a lock of wavy blonde hair. But he wasn't just handsome as an angel, he was also kind to a fault. Generous with his time, thoughtful...and best of all, he was studying for the ministry.

Sela honored that. It could have been the one problem in their relationship-his vow to not have sex outside of marriage-but he somehow managed to make her feel adored enough to forget it. She was sure he'd come around anywhere.

"It's been the best time of my life, too, babe." said Andy. His face was serious.

"What?" she asked.

"It's the best time, I guess."

"What?"

"Come on. Kneel with me."

Sela had to admit this was still new to her-Andy's faith. She'd not been to church in 10 years before she met him. "Okay..."

They knelt, careful of the stony ground. A steady breeze ruffled Andy's thick hair-she marvelled again at his lovely face, now so serious.

"Sela," he said, "It's been 8 months. I've never met anyone more perfect than you."

She teared up. "Baby..."

"Shhh...this is very important. I know you've been through this before...but-"

Andy teared up, and Sela found her own emotions mirroring his."But, I want us to make love for the first time."

This surprised her. "Andy...well...your vow about not-"

"I know, baby..." he smiled suddenly, his face lighting up like the moutaintop around them. "So that leads to this; will you marry me?"

There was no hesitation-"Yes! Yes, Andy, Yes!"

She began to kiss him, breathlessly excited. He stood and helped her stand, clinging excitedly to him.

"Come on baby-let's take a look at our world." he said.

They walked hand-in-hand together to the edge. Below was a 2000 foot drop at least-not sheer, and there little cliffs and jutting stones along the way. Sela felt no fear. Looking down on the mist shrouded valley, the brilliant sky above-Sela had never felt her life so perfectly fall into place.

"You know what?" Andy said, his tone at once awed and pensive.

"What?" she asked, turning again to look at him.

"I changed my mind."

With one strong shove she went flying over the edge.

Sela opened her eyes and all she knew was pain. Was this hell? She wondered.

Her first instinct was to move, and nothing obeyed. Yet she could feel things, everywhere. Everything she was sure, was broken.

Her mind kept trying to clear. What-happened?

That was when she saw him.

Andy stood over her, looking worn out and upset.

Andy, he'd proposed. Oh, God-now she was this broken shell, and he'd proposed, hadn't he?

She couldn't think.

"Damn." he said.

She tried to respond, but only a croak came out.

"You are one tough little cunt, Sela. I guess if circumstances were different you'd be lucky this rock broke your fall."

If she'd been able to see through the confusion in her brain, through the immense, dull and sharp pains everywhere, she would have responded to this bizarre, completely uncharacteristic statement from Andy with complete shock.

"Guess that's okay, though."

She heard a sound that was bizarrely out of place. His zipper going down.

He stepped out of her field of vision-moving her eyes hurt too much-then seemed to reappear at her feet, on his knees.

Her feet. My God, Sela thought; My feet are wrong.

They were at wrong angles. Jesus, everything was broken. Andy. What the hell was he doing? What was going on? Had he called rescue services? Then she realized something really awful. Andy had taken off his pants. He was hard, too.

"As long as you're still warm I'll go ahead and fuck you."

With that he roughly pulled her legs apart.

The pain was bright red and blinding then, and she mercifully went out.

Andy put her out of her misery with a sharp edged stone that fit in his hand like a primitive axe. She'd made a few more noises-grotesque gurgling sounds. He got tired of them and didn't feel like any more sex stuff. With a couple of hard shoves she was over the edge again, and this time fell the distance. She'd be splatter by the time he checked on her at the bottom. He wasn't kidding though-she'd fallen far enough to that ledge to kill most anyone, yet still had been conscious briefly. She might have just lay there till she died, anyway, but it was okay. Only made it more interesting for him.

As he made his way back to the cabin they rented, gearing up for the story and the questions, he reflected. Eight months wait had been pretty good. One, two more months and he probably wouldn't have been able to do it. Not out of fear, or love, but out of entanglement. This was the point at which the entanglements between them were loose enough, easily unthreaded, that it would be easy for him to move on.

Andy laughed to himself. Stick to the secret, and you never failed.

The secret was to never care.

And to have fun doing it.

Andy was a master of this.

In 5 months he would be ordained into the ministry.
